Yes, but obtaining the appropriate mechanical license before uploading is your responsibility.
A cover song uses someone else's composition. To reproduce and distribute it - even in your own recording - you need a mechanical license from the composition rights holder. Subvert does not obtain mechanical licenses on your behalf for cover recordings.
If you've distributed your cover through another service Services like Soundrop or DistroKid obtain mechanical licenses for the platforms they distribute to - but not necessarily for Subvert. Check with your distribution service to confirm whether your existing license covers Subvert, or obtain a separate one.
Where to get a mechanical license
- In the US: the Mechanical Licensing Collective (MLC) at themlc.com, or services like Songfile (Harry Fox Agency)
- Outside the US: your local collection society or mechanical licensing organization
Uploading a cover without the appropriate license violates our Terms of Use and is your responsibility as the uploader.
